What is a breast reduction?
Reduces the size of the breasts, improving the physical symptoms caused by very voluminous breasts.
Procedure
A breast reduction, also known as a reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reduce the size and improve the shape of the breasts. Usually, women who are candidates for this type of procedure have related physical symptoms that include back pain, neck pain, stretch marks on the breasts, difficulty sleeping, even grooves in the shoulder areas where bra straps rest. The incisions will vary depending on the size of the breast prior to the operation and the final size desired (after the operation).
An incision is made around the nipple and areola, accompanied by another vertical incision from the areola to the inframammary fold, as well as a horizontal incision in the crease under the breast on some occasions. There are minimally invasive techniques that can be used in breast reduction surgery and that allow a successful reduction in size by limiting the length of the incisions.
In some cases, to reduce very large breasts, the nipple and areola may have to be surgically removed and later re-implanted. Removing and reattaching the nipple or areola tissue can lead to loss of sensation in the nipple and the inability to feed the breast (lactation).
Duration
The intervention usually lasts between 2 and 4 hours depending on the technique chosen and the size of the breasts.
Anesthesia
The intervention is usually performed with regional anesthesia and intravenous sedation or it can also be with general anesthesia.
Hospitalization
Depending on the size of the breasts, the type of anesthesia selected, and the duration of the surgical intervention, patients may be discharged the same day as the intervention or have to spend one night in the hospital.
Side Effects
Swelling and/or numbness of the breasts.
Risks
Visible scarring, loss of nipple sensation, loss of ability to breastfeed, loss of nipple and/or breast tissue, asymmetrical shape.
Recovery
Normally, it takes two weeks for recovery. Most patients return to their normal rhythm of life in this period of time. It is recommended not to engage in strenuous physical activities until three to six weeks after the operation.
Results
Decrease in symptoms of pain and discomfort secondary to the excessive weight of your breasts. The results may vary according to each person.
